Recorded by Richard Harris, 1968 (#2)
Frank Sinatra version arranged by Don Costa (Recorded August 20, 1979
                                             Reprise Records)

Em                                G
Spring was never waiting for us, girl;

                  F                         Am   F  Am  C  C/B
It ran one step ahead as we followed in the dance

   Em                               G
Between the parted pages and were pressed,

                         F                          Am   F  Am  C  C/B
In love's hot, fevered iron like a striped pair of pants.

(Refrain:)

    D              Dsus4  D    D9  D   Dmaj7
MacArthur's Park is mel - ting in the dark

       Dmaj7sus4 Dmaj7  Dm7/9  D    D7
All the sweet, green ic - ing flowing down...

G                 Am7     D9      G
Someone left the cake out in the rain

Em7 A7      D              A7
 I don't think that I can take it

          Em7             F#m7
'Cause it took so long to bake it

         Bm7             Bm7/E    G  G/F#     F     D7
And I'll never have that recipe again Oh, no!

Em                           G
I recall the yellow cotton dress

                F                             Am   F  Am  C  C/B
Foaming like a wave on the ground around your knees

    Em                                 G
The birds, like tender babies in your hands

         F                                Am   F  Am  C  C/B
And the old men playing checkers by the trees.

(Repeat Refrain:)

(Instrumental Interlude: | Bb | Fmaj7 | Am7  G/B-Am7 |)

G               G/F#         Em      Em7     Cmaj7 Cmaj7/6
There will be another song for me, for I will sing  it;

Cdim                            D7        Cdim      G9   G
There will be another dream for me -- someone will bring it.

       Cmaj7
I will drink the wine while it is warm,

    Am7   Cdim    Am7       Bm                   E7
And never let you catch me looking at the sun;

    Am             Am+7       Am7     D7  Am7
And after all the loves of my life,

G              G/F#       Cmaj7            Cmaj7/6    Fmaj7
After all the loves of my life you'll still be the one.

Cdim    G       G/F#         Em     Em6             Cmaj7 Cmaj7/6
 I will take my life into my hands,      and I will use    it;

      Cdim                       D7      Cdim     G9   G
I will win the worship in their eyes, and I will lose it.

       Cmaj7                    Am7
I will have the things that I desire,

       Cdim    Am7       Bm                  E7
And my passion flow like rivers through the sky.

    Am             Am+7       Am7  D7 Am7 G             G/F#       Cmaj7
And after all the loves of my life after all the loves of my life

        Fmaj7        Am  Am+7 D7    Cdim      Em    A7
I'll be thinking of you and wondering why.

*Yeah, yeah, I know...I don't have the interludes in there. On my best day
I couldn't play that fast anyway, with or without a backup orchestra, so I
omitted them -- so it may be a poor decision to include it here at all.
And I'm not about to disagree that this one is contender for the "Dumbest
Lyrics Ever Written" award. However, with the recent passing of Harris, I
feel something of an obligation to commemorate him; so, this one's for
you, Dumbledore. The arrangement itself is based on one I found in the
archives of the alt.guitar.tab newsgroup (from nearly ten years ago) but
I'm unsure of the correct individual to whom credit is due. And thanks to
Stan R. for the challenge of attempting this one.
